I was browsing the net for info about interiors when a question suddenly came to my mind - how much practicality n art must we incorporate in one design? Are they intertwined with one another with matching volume, or one thing must be put first before the other? If the latter is correct, then should we put artistic first or practically beforehand?

I have once had the honor of being in the company of a great LA in Malaysia. He taught me about the user’s needs, the facilities I must incorporated, and then only he asked about the concept. He definitely put practicality beforehand.

Then I had the honor of being in the company of another great LA who seemingly puts art in hand before practicality. He would come out with great designs, which were produced to stimulate and manipulate a certain space, to trigger certain emotions from the observer. I am a great admirer of his work, the sincerity and cleverness of his ideas.

He once told me, if a ficus planted alongside a road is trimmed to a certain shape just because, means it doesn’t have any significant meaning behind; then it’s useless. But if the same ficus, trimmed to the same shape, with some meaning or message in the back of the designer’s mind, then it’s worth doing.

I guest I’d say I lean more towards the practicality side. I got back home that day, thinking. To my inexperience mind, whether the designer has a meaning or what behind it, it’s no use if it can’t reach the audience. The users will only be seeing the same thing, not many will pause to think what is the message behind it. It will only be meaningful to the one who created it, and to very few observant eyes. This could be sufficient enough for the designer …or could be very frustrating.

Then again, I’m too young and inexperience. I rather talk first about the usage of a space whenever I design, then only will I search for a deeper feeling and deeper value to incorporate within. Whether the design can satisfy the user’s need, beforehand, on top of anything else. I’m much more concerned whether the design can generate a sense of security and avoid criminal attentions than worrying whether the pathway is slanted or straight.

There can never be a black or white, right or wrong in design approaches. Right now I’m in the journey of finding my own identity, of creating my own sketches with my own flavor and my own philosophy. I love both art and practicality. Try as I might to create my own identity, I must beforehand explore what’s already here…So forgive me if in this few years my design is pretentious…or imitating…because it’s a long and winding way to find my own identity…

malaysia just got hit by tSunami - reality check to us… taking for granTed our country as neVer been in the miDst of geogRaphical diSaster b4…suBhanAllah… me?starting the final year semester…struggling with my final project…my main target: to score A in final project. HOPEFULLY!!!

::::::FEBRUARY - [hectiC contiNues]

still struggliNg with my fiNal project…hopes of getting a fiNal A for my finals seemed far and far away…bnyknya duGaan…my exterNal supervisor prof nik Malik pulak tue…mcm2 kena koMen…adeh this sem the Dean’s list naik from 3.50 to 3.75..dun know if i can reach it. Concentrate 101% to study. Lain x pikir.

tgk kusyuk buat final oh ooo…gebum!!! This is the Worst month of 2005!!! Things i’ve never thought happened did happened..hit me from nowhere…all when i’m in the midst of completing my final!!! VERY T O U G H tests from Allah. I would never have made it without Him.

A mixture of emotions in this month…Lost a special friend whom b4 this i trusted wit my life….miss her terribly… learn big lessons of trust,of forgiveness, of gratitude… To err is human. To forgive is DIVINE. But alhamdulillah, dlm kesusahan, Allah presents me with His gift - finaLLy got an A for my Final project - score top in class. Got my 4th Dean’s list. Praise to Him. All comes from Him.

Convocation!!! syoknye!!! Graduating second class upper, celebrate with my dear family n frenz. Finally, a bachelor hOlder!! and Finally, a Landscape Architect!!! (^_^)

Got another offer at Meda Inc Bhd. Decided to take it…better offer. But miss Aroma Tropics soo much!! Two days afterwards, got another offer for interview at Putrajaya Hldg. A week afterwards, another one at Konsep Inovartis. Rezeki murah, kata mak…(^-^) alhamdulillah…………
